Technology and seniors

Computer new technology for mom or dad

When we think about technology and its uses, we always picture the young taking advantage of the latest breakthroughs.

It is hard to imagine our seniors using technology because many are not attracted to it. Or they don’t consider it necessary. Well, it is true that the young generation appreciates technology more than seniors. But that doesn’t mean that senior citizens cannot use it for their benefit as well. But we are not talking about hearing devices, fully operational wheelchairs, and so on. We are talking about that part of the technology that assists senior citizens when living alone. Things that make their lives easier and more comfortable.

Devices specificity developed for seniors include Google Home and Amazon Echo.

We all know how difficult it is to live alone after a certain age, especially when health issues are involved. Amazon Echo, for instance, is an incredibly useful device. It has voice recognition. So the person using it won’t have to type. The user can give Echo a command like to wake you up or call you a cab, or even ask a question. You can ask Echo almost anything you want because it will search the Internet for the answer you need. The device is more than capable of answering any question you may have.

How can a device like Echo help a senior?

Well, let’s just think about those seniors who have dementia or tend to forget things rather quickly. Alexa, the voice behind the Echo device, will never get annoyed. It doesn’t matter how many times you ask the same question. The user can quickly set Alexa to perform various reminders during the day. Including when to take the medicines or the next Doctor’s appointment. The device can even play the patient’s favorite song. But memory is not the only thing Echo can do to assist our seniors. It can turn the lights on and off, according to need, and it can do the same with the TV as well. Thus, for people that have a reduced mobility or hands tremor, this can be a huge relief.

So, a device like Echo can do a lot in helping senior citizens live independently.

It can even read them a book or tell them the latest news stories. With a population that is getting older, technology advancements like Echo could be of great help. Seniors could benefit from the existence of Echo and other similar devices.

“We have been so pleased with you and the care you have shown us, our family, and my parents. You have been so helpful and genuine, and have always been there in our time of need. We had some very good and qualified caregivers, and I thank you for that. Thank you for working with us, so hard, to get CalPERS up and going and correcting all the mistakes they have made over the years. You guys have gone through a lot with us. Thank you again, for your kindness, professionalism, and care!” – Donna B.
“ActiveCare watched over my stepfather while I was at work. The caregiver was punctual and knew how to react to his moods. She did light housework, bathed and fed him, and made sure he took his medicine. Great personality. Very trustworthy. Best price for the exceptional care she gave him.” – Bettina
