What is in Home Senior Care?

Instead of moving into a care facility, many seniors prefer to stay in the comfort of their own homes. But, sometimes senior citizens need a little extra help taking care of themselves. Our home care services provide a friendly, trained professional to assist with activities of daily living. Having a professional caregiver to assist and ensure safety gives seniors the freedom to live independently.

At the same time, you get peace of mind knowing that there is someone with your loved one, as you go about living your own life. Our staff members serve as companions, caregivers, and friends.

Personalized care is one of the most important parts of the experience. Not all seniors need the same level of care or the same services. We recognize that each individual is unique, with different needs and lifestyles. All care services are molded to fit the situation of each senior, no matter how much or how little help they need.

Non-Medical Elder Care Services

In home elder care is not the same as in home nursing care. Some medical conditions require trained care from medical practitioners. We do not provide medical care, but we can assist seniors with some medical conditions.

Memory loss, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and arthritis are the most common medical conditions we deal with while providing care. Staff members are trained in how to handle these conditions, as well as when to refer someone for medical care.

Study results have shown that those suffering from dementia have a higher quality of life and do more activities per day if they live at home and receive home care, rather than institutional care.  Having a dementia caregiver allows your loved one to feel more comfortable and to remain in a familiar environment that promotes social contact, an active lifestyle, and a happier state of mind. Active Care’s Services

There are many aspects to caring for a senior citizen at home. Each routine is unique to the person being cared for and tailored to their abilities, preferences, and lifestyle. As part of our caregiving, we can provide these services to seniors who need them:

  • Light Housekeeping and Tidying

We can help out with making sure the environment of the home is clean and comfortable. This includes light housekeeping, dishes, laundry, and other simple tasks to help take care of the house and make life easier.

  • Personal Care and Hygiene Assistance

Some seniors, especially those with arthritis, may need help with personal hygiene and grooming care. Fingernail clipping, dressing, brushing teeth, and many other simple tasks can prove difficult for some elders, so our staff will assist in these and more personal hygiene needs.

Studies have shown that a good personal hygiene and bathing routine can help seniors to feel better about themselves. Hair styling, combing, and beauty routines can have positive benefits for the elderly. We are dedicated to making life as pleasant as possible for seniors, which is why personal care is a large part of our service.

  • Shower Assistance

Showers and baths can be dangerous for elderly people, because of the risk of slipping. Falling while bathing accounts for many injuries annually, some of which are very serious. Supervision will allow seniors to reduce the risks of bathing alone and avoid injury.

For anyone with cognitive or physical challenges, caregivers can be there to assist in shampooing, shaving with an electric razor, and other routine grooming.

  • Moving and Mobility Help

Those with mobility challenges can count on help from capable caregiver to get around the house. Times when falls are a risk, such as getting in and out of bed, moving up and down the stairs, and entering or exiting a wheelchair, are safer when a caregiver is present. Proper movement can eliminate bed sores and muscle atrophy.

  • Companion Care

Loneliness and social isolation can reduce seniors’ quality of life and lead to depression. Companion care ensures that seniors do not spend all their time alone at home, and will have a friendly face around to keep them company throughout the week.

Seniors that are left alone too frequently have been shown to have accelerated rates of cognitive decline and a higher rate of depression. Having a companion around gives the opportunity for conversation and social interaction on a daily basis to help stimulate the mind and keep away the blues.

  • Assistance with Preparing and Feeding Meals

Planning and preparing meals can present a problem for seniors with arthritis and other physical or mental conditions. Home care professionals can assist by planning healthy meals based on the dietary needs and preferences of the elder, then prepare the meals at home. We will provide feeding assistance when necessary.

In many cases, seniors are able to help with meal preparation as well, which can become a great activity every day. It provides a sense of pride and encourages active engagement in daily life tasks that may have been too difficult to do alone.

  • General Home, Plant, and Pet Care

To make sure the house still operates smoothly, caregivers will do basic chores around the home. This includes feeding pets, watering plants, fetching the mail, answering the phone, and other simple tasks.

  • Senior Errand Service

It can be difficult for the elderly to get around outside of the house without help. We can run errands like grocery shopping and home re-supply from local shops. If there are appointments to keep, we can help your loved one get there on time.

  • Incontinence Care

Problems with incontinence can be embarrassing. That’s why it’s important to have an experienced caregiver to help deal with these issues in a professional manner. An attentive caregiver will be able to help a senior avoid discomfort and poor hygiene. Incontinence is one of the main reasons given to place someone in an assisted living facility.

  • Respite Care for Other Caregivers

It can be difficult to care for an elder all the time, especially when you have your own responsibilities to deal with. We offer respite care to help you if you just need a break. You can plan ahead to get a vacation or call in for emergency care when something comes up suddenly.

Respite care is one of the most important services we offer, because it allows you the time you need to take care of yourself as well. This will help you stay refreshed and give better care to your loved one when you stay with them again. Call us for a free estimate – (916) 993-6298.

Why in Home Care is Important

For many seniors, living independently is a priority. It can be difficult to imagine moving into an assisted living facility after a lifetime of independent living. Even if daily life gets more difficult, many seniors would prefer to stay in their own home regardless. In home care helps extend the time that seniors are able to stay in their own home.

It can be difficult getting used to accepting help from a caregiver, but with time the arrangement usually turns out to be more favorable than institutional care. It’s true that home care services aren’t perfect. However, the benefits of allowing seniors to stay at home will more than make up for any difficulties that may arise from the new arrangement.

Giving Back Their Dignity

More than anything else, caring for an elder at home is about helping them keep their dignity. Their care is kept on their own terms, and they aren’t taken away from their familiar environment. We find that seniors who stay in their own homes lead more vibrant lives and spend their days more happily than they would otherwise.

Our Carmichael elderly care staff members are well trained to act as companions to seniors at home. We are not there to boss anyone around but to gently help when needed and assist with tasks that may have become more difficult over time. Our compassionate and attentive caregivers are ready to help your loved one to live a better life where they are able to keep their independence and remain dignified.
