6 Early Warning Signs of Dementia

by Amanda Becker

Dementia is not one particular disease. It is a collective term used to describe a variety of symptoms including a decline in memory and thinking skills. It interferes with one’s ability to perform daily tasks.

Dementia is very common, and there are more than 3 million cases in the United States every year. Alzheimer’s disease is to blame for 60-80% of all cases.

Fortunately, there are many warning signs to discover it early, and if you start to notice these signs, you should see a physician as soon as possible. They may be able to provide solutions that slow the progress of the disease if you catch it early.

Regular Memory Loss

Most people forget things from time to time. But if you start noticing that you are forgetting things more frequently and not remember them later, even things such as a phone number, you may be experiencing a symptom of dementia. You may have to ask someone to repeat something multiple times and still not be able to remember. What out for these little clues.

Poor Judgment

Another sign of dementia is making poor choices or making risky decisions, such as forgetting that you are watching a child or forgetting to turn the stove off.

Problems with Language

Someone with dementia may find it hard to remember words or have trouble finding the right word. At times, the words may even be made up or unintelligible. It’s normal for most people, but if it begins to happen more often this is often a sign of dementia.

Not Knowing Where You Are or What Time It Is

If you find yourself forgetting what day of the week it is, what street you are even if it is your own, not knowing how to get back to your house, and not remembering where you were going, this is also a common symptom of dementia.

Misplacing Things

Can’t seem to remember where you put anything anymore? Did you leave your keys or wallet in a strange place, such as the refrigerator? A person with dementia is more likely to put things in inappropriate places.

We had some very good and qualified caregivers, and I thank you for that. Thank you for working with us, so hard, to get CalPERS up and going and correcting all the mistakes they have made over the years. You guys have gone through a lot with us. Thank you again, for your kindness, professionalism, and care!” – Donna B.
