Transporting a senior to the Hospital

Elderly Hospital

It can be scary when you need to get an elderly family member, friend, or neighbor to the hospital.

A lot of people may not know how to do this safely, but the important thing is to get them to the hospital as comfortable, safe, and quickly as possible. If you feel like you are unable to do this yourself, then it’s important to get help. Elderly transportation is something that is available in a lot of cities, and there are some options to explore. These options include paratransit services, rideshare services, and Veteran’s transport services. But what if you don’t have access to any of these services?

Be Prepared

The first step in performing a successful transport is to make sure that you’re prepared. This means bringing along anything that the patient might need at the hospital. Clothes, slippers, wallet with ID, money, and individual personal items are all necessary. Also, medication and any relevant information from doctors should also go with you.

Be Comfortable

If you drive a minuscule car or one that is lifted up high on big wheels, then it might be time to borrow a vehicle from someone. Some cars are difficult to get in and out of for most people, and when you’re taking an older adult to the hospital, you need to make sure that they can enter and exit the vehicle as easily as possible without much trouble. You still will need to help them. Go slow as you assist them, and support them the whole time. Make sure that they have enough leg room and space for an oxygen tank if needed. Buckle them up so that they don’t have to fight with the seat belt themselves.

Call Ahead

It’s a good idea to call ahead to the hospital and let them know the situation. They can then be prepared for the patient and have a wheelchair and medical staff waiting at the door for them if necessary. Now is the time to take advantage of valet parking so that you don’t have to leave the senior alone for any amount of time. The hospital staff will appreciate knowing that you’re coming, and it will make it easier when you get there.

Transporting a senior to the hospital may seem daunting, but it is possible. Get help where you can and ensure that they are comfortable on the ride.

We had some very good and qualified caregivers, and I thank you for that. Thank you again, for your kindness, professionalism, and care!” – Donna B.
